Description
Chalmette Refinery Stacks on the Mississippi 5. In this horizontal composition, a multitude of metal pipes and smoke stacks create a surrealistic skyline, complimented by wisps of smoke and licking flames. The lighting is warm and from a low angle, complimenting the warm colors of the rusting metal, the side lighting adding definition and depth. The stacks are set against a warmly blue sky. This is one of my many photos of the Chalmette Refinery, as seen from the deck of a ship as we made our way along the Mississippi River south from New Orleans, on our way to the Gulf of Mexico. The Chalmette Refinery is a heavy crude oil refinery, which refines the crude oil from the Gulf and Venezuela into gasoline, aromatic chemicals, asphalt, butane, diesel fuel, fuel oil, jet fuel, kerosene, naphtha, petroleum coke, propane, refinery-grade propylene, sulfur and vacuum gas oil. The refinery occupies 400 acres near the site of the last battle of the war of 1812, the Chalmette National Historical Park. The refinery was constructed in 1915, and at the time of this writing was owned in part by ExxonMobil, but was also slated for sale.
