Description
1940 Boeing Stearman Biplane flyby. In this horizontal composition, the venerable Stearman Biplane, resplendent in red paint and trailing white smoke across the cloudless blue sky, streaks past in a shallow dive. The aircraft is seen nearly level with the wings, a bit forward of directly to the side, the angle, lighting, close framing, and motion-freezing fast shutter speed all combining to reveal an exceptional amount of detail. The pilot is clearly visible in the cockpit. The shutter speed is also just slow enough to allow the spinning propeller to blur a bit, adding to the sense of motion. The Stearman Model 75 Biplane was built during the 1930s and 1940s. Stearman became a subsidiary of Boeing, so the aircraft is now sometimes referred to as the Stearman-Boeing Model 75 biplane. Powered by a Continental R-670 radial engine, the Stearman has a top speed of about 125 mph. Look also for my several other shots of this Stearman doing a variety of stunts. This Boeing Stearman Biplane was photographed at the 2015 Oregon International Air Show, at the Hillsboro Airport near Portland, Oregon. It was piloted by Vicky Benzing. See also my many other photos of classic, stunt, and military aircraft.
