Description
Butterfly Silhouette on Leaf. In this artistic horizontal composition, a butterfly’s silhouette adorns a broad, backlit tropical leaf. The bright green of the leaf is pleasing and is almost constant throughout the frame, and it also has a pleasing pattern of veining. Its central stem cuts through the lower left of the frame at a diagonal that is almost perpendicular to the gently curving veining, adding another element to the frame that imparts motion. Adding to this motion is the off-center placement of the subject, the shadow of the butterfly, which presides over the top right of the frame and spreads about two-thirds of the way across the frame. Interestingly, light shining through white spots on the butterfly’s wings illuminate similar spots within its shadow. This butterfly silhouette is a nice semi-abstract, communicating the idea of a butterfly without actually showing it. Abstract photography seeks to portray a subject not literally, but more viscerally, communicating through form (shapes, patterns, lines, curves), color, texture, and the play of light and shadow. Often, just a small portion of the whole subject is shown, in order for part to speak for the whole, to communicate deeper meaning or aesthetic appeal through the details seen which would be missed if the whole were visible. This butterfly was photographed at the Victoria Butterfly Gardens, not far from the Butchart Gardens in Victoria B.C., Canada. There are a large variety of tropical butterflies at these butterfly gardens.
