Description
Yaquina Head Lighthouse, Oregon Coast. In this vertical composition (the format befitting the subject), the white spire of the lighthouse stands contrasted against its own black and red roof, the structure contrasted as a whole against the azure sky, the whole of the upper two-thirds of the frame contrasted yet more against a field of raucously yellow flowers growing in the foreground and on the hillsides leading up to the edifice. A little green on the hillside adds just a touch more color contrast, while flowers in the extreme foreground are thrown far out of focus, providing foreground interest while at the same time isolating the subject. The tower of the lighthouse is nearly centered between the left and right sides of the frame, the static composition lending a stalwart quality to the historic building, while the spire leaps into the sky and nearly to the top of the frame, emphasizing its height. The Yaquina Head Lighthouse is a historic building, construction began on it in 1871. At the time, the location was called Cape Foulweather, and early records list the building as the Cape Foulweather Lighthouse. It is on the central Oregon coast, not far from Lincoln City or Newport.
