Description
1932 Packard 903. This abstract of classic automobile chrome is a study of contrasts. The gold paint of the car contrasts with the bright chrome of the grill and accoutrements adorning the front of the car. The white of the brightly-lit sky reflected in the chrome contrast with the reds and other shades of nearby object reflected in the shiny metal. The curving forms of the multiple headlamps, horn, and badge contrast the heavily repeated straight vertical lines of the grill, and the straight horizontal mounting bar which bisects the frame about a third down from the top (a nice composition, mimicking the horizon line of a landscape). The shot is nearly centered left to right on the center of the grill, yielding a scene that is nearly, but not entirely, symmetrical. The contrast, exposure, and depth of field are all well-controlled to best show off the car's features. The 903 was Packard's Deluxe Eight line, with several models, with 1932 seeing the first newly-designed Packard since 1923. The Great Depression probably was the instigation for the new, more economical designs. Designs of this ear were the archetypal gangster sedans of the prohibition era, and would soon give way to heavier forms just prior to WWII. Abstract photography seeks to portray a subject not literally, but more viscerally, communicating through form (shapes, patterns, lines, curves), color, texture, and the play of light and shadow. Often, just a small portion of the whole subject is shown, in order for part to speak for the whole, to communicate deeper meaning or aesthetic appeal through the details seen which would be missed if the whole were visible. I particularly enjoy photographing abstracts of classic vehicles– classic cars, classic airplanes, even classic boats– finding a lot of beauty in the curves, colors, and lines of these relics of bygone eras. Photographed at a car show in Gresham, Oregon, August of 2017. See also my many other abstract photographs, especially of classic aircraft and classic cars.
