Description
1957 Chevy Bel Air Grill Abstract 1. In this horizontal abstract, the jet aircraft-inspired forms of the grill and other fixtures of the 1957 Chevy Bel Air are reflected in the gleaming chrome of its bumper. The gold tones of the Bel Air grill compliment the red of the car’s body paint, and contrast with the blue of the reflected sky. Only a small portion of the grill is actually seen, but its reflection is stretched out along the curve of the bumper guard. The forms of metal flow around curves, giving them a liquid nature. The depth of field is deep, providing good detail across the frame. There is a lot of motion in the image, as static metal in straight lines is bent, warped, and liquefied in the mirror-like chrome. The Chevrolet Bel Air was Chevy’s upper model line, with the popular second generation body style running from 1955-1957. The 1957 model has the stereotypical large fins on the rear. Like Ford and other makes, the styling of this era of Chevrolets reflected the forms found in jet aircraft, the high technology of the day, and implied speed and power. Typical aircraft features which are reflected in the styling of these cars are the jet intakes, wings, fins, and even the jet exhausts.
Abstract photography seeks to portray a subject not literally, but more viscerally, communicating through form (shapes, patterns, lines, curves), color, texture, and the play of light and shadow. Often, just a small portion of the whole subject is shown, in order for part to speak for the whole, to communicate deeper meaning or aesthetic appeal through the details seen which would be missed if the whole were visible. I particularly enjoy photographing abstracts of classic vehicles– classic cars, classic airplanes, even classic boats– finding a lot of beauty in the curves, colors, and lines of these relics of bygone eras. Photographed at a car show in Gresham, Oregon, August 8th, 2015. See also my many other abstract photographs, especially of classic cars and classic aircraft.
