Description
1940 Boeing Stearman Biplane stunt 2. In this dramatic vertical composition, the venerable Stearman biplane, resplendent in red paint, cavorts in the cloudless blue sky, white smoke tracing its journeys. The biplane is inverted, attitude nose down, wings tilted slightly showing their undersides. Part of the airplane is obscured in the thick smoke. The framing is close enough to give a good look at the biplane, yet wide enough to show much of the smoke trail, adding drama to the scene. A fast shutter speed freezes the movement of the aircraft, yet is slow enough to allow the spinning propeller to blur a little, adding to the sense of motion.
The Stearman Model 75 Biplane was built during the 1930s and 1940s. Stearman became a subsidiary of Boeing, so the aircraft is now sometimes referred to as the Stearman-Boeing Model 75 biplane. Powered by a Continental R-670 radial engine, the Stearman has a top speed of about 125 mph. Look also for my several other shots of this Stearman doing a variety of stunts. This Boeing Stearman Biplane was photographed at the 2015 Oregon International Air Show, at the Hillsboro Airport near Portland, Oregon. It was piloted by Vicky Benzing. See also my many other photos of classic, stunt, and military aircraft.
