Description
Panther Creek Falls Summer Waterfall -close 2. In this mountain summertime photo of Panther Creek Falls, taken in the cool shade of late afternoon, a myriad of streams are drawn out into silky strands by the long exposure. The vertical composition shows the waters added to the waterfall by a spring above where Panther Creek leaps into the gorge over the basalt ledge. The spring’s streams cascade down basalt steps covered in moss. The cool colors of the light highlight the greens of the verdant moss, while highlighting the yellower tones of other mosses, and the evenness of the light affords a lot of detail, especially apparent near the bottom of the frame where some of the streams fall past a ledge and spread into a fine curtain of cool water.
North of Carson, Washington, near the Columbia River Gorge. This shot was taken from a high vantage point, about on level with the top of the falls, from a viewing area on a trail at the top of the falls, and gives a very good view of the falls across the narrow rock bowl. The trail below the viewing platform is precipitous, wet, slippery, strewn with loose rock, and is dangerous. Panther Creek Falls is on Panther Creek, a few miles upstream from Panther Creek Campground, also on Panther Creek. Located near Big Lava Bed in Skamania County, the falls shown here a formed from a confluence of Panther Creek and a broad natural spring at the same location, this upper part plunging over 100 feet. See my other shots of Panther Creek and Panther Creek Falls, and my many, many other shots of waterfalls, primarily those found in the Columbia River Gorge, east of Portland, Oregon (and also including this part of Washington’s southern border).
