Description
Wizard Island Stormy Sky- Crater Lake. Blues predominate in this horizontal composition showing the cinder cone Wizard Island on Crater Lake under a dramatic stormy sky with broken gray clouds. Both the sky and the water of the lake are richly blue, contrasting with the white of some of the clouds and the dark forms of Wizard Island and the caldera rim under cloud shadow. The island, rather than being centered, reigns over the right side of the frame, its round form mirrored by the curve of the shoreline of the lake at frame left and contrasting with the jaggedness of the rock at the crater rim, which forms the apparent horizon a third of the way down from the top of the frame. Wizard Island is a volcanic cinder cone which formed at the bottom of the crater left by the eruption of Mt. Mazama. The island rises 755 feet above the surface of the lake, and boasts a 500 foot wide and 100 foot deep crater at its peak, named the “Witches Cauldron”. Crater Lake was formed by collapse of the volcano Mt. Mazama more than 7500 years ago. Crater Lake is five by six miles across, and at nearly 2000 feet deep, is the deepest lake in the United States, and one of the deepest lakes in the world. The caldera rim which contains Crater Lake is at an elevation of 7000-8000 feet. Crater Lake sits within Crater Lake National Park in Klamath County in central southern Oregon. It is the only national park in Oregon, and being established in 1902 is the fifth oldest national park in the United States. The area is a treasure trove of geological features.
