Description
Mount Hood over Lost Lake Sunrise (6024 x 4022px). Subtle pinks and deep blues characterize this atmospheric horizontal composition, depicting Mount Hood rising majestically over Lost Lake at sunrise. The soft and moody lighting surrounds the subject as pink sunlight falls directly on the east side of the snow-covered volcano. The off-center placement of the peak, upper third placement of the water line, and gentle angles formed by the slopes of the hills add movement to the image, contrasting with the apparent stillness of the water (a very long exposure served to smooth out the choppy water). Logs and foliage provide foreground interest and frame the subject, and darkness to balance the light of the image. Of the many volcanoes in Oregon, Mt. Hood is considered the most likely to erupt. It's last major eruption was in 1782, and most recent minor eruptive event was in 1907. Located roughly 50 miles from Portland, Oregon, Mt. Hood features several ski slopes and winter athletic training facilities. Lost Lake features camping and a resort.
