Description
Mount Hood over Lost Lake Sunset (4022 x 6024px). Vibrant pinks and contrasting deep blues characterize this atmospheric vertical composition, depicting Mount Hood rising majestically over Lost Lake at sunrise. The soft and moody lighting surrounds the subject as pink sunlight falls directly on the side of the snow-covered volcano, reflecting in the lake below. The left-right centered mountain, nearly straight waterline, and apparent stillness of the water create a static, serene impression (a very long exposure served to smooth out the choppy water), while the upper third placement of the waterline and flowing dark angles of the tree to the left and hillside to the right combine with the complex haphazardness of the foliage to create a constrasing sense of movement-- the total effect being peace amidst change and chaos. The tree to the left leads the eye to the subject while its roots provide foreground interest, and the foliage all around frames the subject, the darkness adding balance to the light of the image. Of the many volcanoes in Oregon, Mt. Hood is considered the most likely to erupt. It's last major eruption was in 1782, and most recent minor eruptive event was in 1907. Located roughly 50 miles from Portland, Oregon, Mt. Hood features several ski slopes and winter athletic training facilities. Lost Lake features camping and a resort.
