Description
Upper Multnomah Falls- Frozen waterfall 2. A winter storm freezes upper Multnomah Falls waterfall, in the Columbia River Gorge, Oregon, in this wide-angle vertical format photograph. Upper Multnomah Falls, an exceptionally tall and thin (not wide) waterfall, plunges through the frame, down past basalt cliffs dramatically garbed in snow and ice and giant icicles, and past a stone footbridge. A long exposure draws the moving water into long, silky white strands, contrasting the moving water with the hard, immobile ice. The lower tier, lower Multnomah Falls, starts midway down the frame under the bridge, wider and adding to the drama as it plunges into a frozen, snow-covered pool near the bottom of the frame. Predominant colors are the whites and blues of the falls and ice, the browns and grays of the basalt cliffs, and some yellows and many greens in the mosses on the cliffs. Because the angle separates the upper falls from the lower waterfall, the image is given good depth (I think it would have made a great 3D image). Located about thirty miles east of Portland, Oregon, in the scenic Columbia River Gorge, Multnomah Falls is one of the taller waterfalls in the United States, at 611 feet tall, with the upper falls at 542 feet tall and the lower falls at 69 feet tall. During the coldest of winters, when the Portland area typically experiences and ice storm, Multnomah Falls often freezes.
