Description
Classic Airplane Propeller. An abstract of the propeller and radial engine of a classic airplane. In this vertical format semi-abstract, the spinner of the propeller, both in chrome, are centered and about a third of the way down from the top of the frame, and the vertically oriented propeller reflects lights and patterns of many different colors. In contrast to the brightness of the chrome, the heads of the radial engine are flat black, and the red and white cowl adds further contrast. The image is full of curves and circles within each other. It speaks of power and grace. Radial engines like this used to be state-of-the-art, a way to arrange the engine cylinders to not take up a lot of space or add a lot of weight. By World War II, the scheme had been mostly abandoned in favor of inline cylinders, and airplanes became much larger and heavier, but also much more powerful. There are three aviation museums that I know of not far from Portland, Oregon, which have classic aircraft. The first is the Tillamook Air Museum, which is in a World War II blimp hangar outside of Tillamook, Oregon, on the Oregon coast. At the time of this writing, this museum is slated to be moved to Madras, Oregon. Another is the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum, in McMinnville, Oregon, which has some more modern aircraft than the Tillamook Air Museum, but also some classics, including the Spruce Goose. The third is the Western Antique Aeroplane and Automobile Museum, in Hood River, Oregon. I photographed this airplane at one of the first two, but I don’t know which. Abstract photography seeks to portray a subject not literally, but more viscerally, communicating through form (shapes, patterns, lines, curves), color, texture, and the play of light and shadow. Often, just a small portion of the whole subject is shown, in order for part to speak for the whole, to communicate deeper meaning or aesthetic appeal through the details seen which would be missed if the whole were visible. Look also for my many other classic airplane abstracts, shots of planes doing stunts, and other aircraft.
