Description
Driftwood 2, Rockaway Beach. Driftwood on an Oregon beach, near the small coastal town of Rockaway, Oregon. This shot has a definite abstract quality, and owing to the predominance of grays, whites, and blacks, appears to be a black-and-white shot, though it was not. The colors represented are actual. The gnarled and tangled roots of a driftwood tree stand in contrast to the smooth regularity of the background sand. A feather near the bottom of the frame adds muted counterpoint. The small Oregon coast town of Rockaway is on the northern Oregon Coast, about thirty or forty miles south of Seaside and about ten miles north of Tillamook, home of famous Tillamook Cheese. Rockaway hosts an impressive offshore rock formation called Twin Rocks, one of which is a natural arch. Rockaway also hosts several lakes near the shore, including Clear Lake, Spring Lake, and the largest, Lake Lytle, popular with fishermen. Being near Tillamook, it is also very near the Tillamook National Forest. Abstract photography seeks to portray a subject not literally, but more viscerally, communicating through form (shapes, patterns, lines, curves), color, texture, and the play of light and shadow. Often, just a small portion of the whole subject is shown, in order for part to speak for the whole, to communicate deeper meaning or aesthetic appeal through the details seen which would be missed if the whole were visible. See my many other shots of the Oregon coast.
