Description
Cruise Ship Abstract Serenade Windows 1. In this abstract horizontal composition, we see several views of the sky and sea, both directly and reflected in the large, tilted cruise ship windows. This image is one of several exploring the abstract characteristics of cruise ship architecture, in this case Royal Caribbean’s Serenade of the Seas. In this image, a bold, curving diagonal line sweeps from upper frame right towards lower frame left, imparting motion to what otherwise could be a very static scene. That curve is counterpointed by the repeating diagonal lines formed by the edges of the window panes, extending at an acute angle from the curve of the roofline. To the right of the curve, a blue sky contrasts with white clouds, but reflected in the windows, we see the darker visage of of the sky down to the horizon and showing some of the sea. Abstract photography seeks to portray a subject not literally, but more viscerally, communicating through form (shapes, patterns, lines, curves), color, texture, and the play of light and shadow. Often, just a small portion of the whole subject is shown, in order for part to speak for the whole, to communicate deeper meaning or aesthetic appeal through the details seen which would be missed if the whole were visible. The Serenade of the Seas is a Radiance class ship, large with a gross tonnage of 90,000, length of 365 feet, and beam of 106 feet, but a draft of only 28 feet. The ship has a cruising speed of 25 knots. Look for my many other images exploring the abstract qualities of cruise ship architecture, as well as other abstracts.
