Description
1938 Chevrolet Master Deluxe. In this abstract of classic chrome, coppery red paint curves along fender and body lines, complimenting the bright chrome circle of the headlamp at top frame left. The curves of the bodywork on the left half of the frame contrast with the straight lines of the grillwork on the right side of the frame. On the extreme frame right, the vertical line of the grill's centerpiece forms a border on one side of the grill, while on the other side, the grill curves to meet the curves in the body. Depth of field, exposure, and contrast are all well-controlled, to highlight the best features of this classic automobile. The Master Deluxe was at the more expensive end of Chevy's lineup from 1933 to 1942, the design becoming generally larger and more featured as the years progressed. Designs of this ear were transitioning from the archetypal gangster sedans of the prohibition era, to the heavier forms just prior to WWII. Abstract photography seeks to portray a subject not literally, but more viscerally, communicating through form (shapes, patterns, lines, curves), color, texture, and the play of light and shadow. Often, just a small portion of the whole subject is shown, in order for part to speak for the whole, to communicate deeper meaning or aesthetic appeal through the details seen which would be missed if the whole were visible. I particularly enjoy photographing abstracts of classic vehicles– classic cars, classic airplanes, even classic boats– finding a lot of beauty in the curves, colors, and lines of these relics of bygone eras. Photographed at a car show in Gresham, Oregon, August of 2017. See also my many other abstract photographs, especially of classic cars and classic aircraft.
