Description
1940 Oldsmobile Touring Sedan. In this abstract of classic chrome, the glossy, deep blue paint of the classic automobile contrasts with the bright chrome and red painted pinstripes in the grillwork. Rows and rows of straight, horizontal lines are broken by the curves of the hoodline, and are interrupted by vertical grillwork at the end. A gold "Olds" emblem adorns the grill, and scenes of the car's surroundings playout in the reflections on the silvery metal. In 1940, Oldsmobile sold its millionth vehicle, perhaps one of them a Series 90 touring sedan. It was also the year that Oldsmobile introduced the first automatic transmission, the Hydra-matic. Like all car manufacturers, car designs changed little during the early and mid 40's, due to the interruption by WWII. Designs were more straight-line and heavy these years, and more fluid, aerodynamic, and aviation-inspired (especially with the coming advent of jet planes) after the war. Abstract photography seeks to portray a subject not literally, but more viscerally, communicating through form (shapes, patterns, lines, curves), color, texture, and the play of light and shadow. Often, just a small portion of the whole subject is shown, in order for part to speak for the whole, to communicate deeper meaning or aesthetic appeal through the details seen which would be missed if the whole were visible. I particularly enjoy photographing abstracts of classic vehicles– classic cars, classic airplanes, even classic boats– finding a lot of beauty in the curves, colors, and lines of these relics of bygone eras. Photographed at a car show in Gresham, Oregon, August of 2017. See also my many other abstract photographs, especially of classic cars and classic aircraft.
