Description
1956 Pontiac Chieftain Grill Trim. In this horizontal composition, the fluid and muscular forms of the grill trim of a 1956 Pontiac Chieftain gleam in the sun. The solid and static metal has been sculpted into forms that impart motion into the composition, the chrome full of curves and bulges. The direct sunlight gleams off of the mirrored surfaces, the light diffracting into natural starbursts due to the use of a small aperture. The metal reflects the blue of the sky, complimenting the blue paint of the body of the car. An interesting feature of this image is that headlight is clearly visible, but only as a reflection in the smooth surface of the bumper. The deep depth of field provides good focus across the frame. Whereas cars of this era typically utilized forms reminiscent of jet aircraft, the high technology of the era and suggestive of speed, power, and dominance, this portion of the design of the Pontiac Chieftain seems to have taken an altogether different tack, relying instead on heavy, solid metal forms– more the bull than the deer, the rhino than the zebra– but depicted in flowing, organic shapes. One of the first new designs for Pontiac after the deprivations of WWII, the Chieftain was produced from 1949-1958. See my other abstract photos of the Pontiac Chieftain.
Abstract photography seeks to portray a subject not literally, but more viscerally, communicating through form (shapes, patterns, lines, curves), color, texture, and the play of light and shadow. Often, just a small portion of the whole subject is shown, in order for part to speak for the whole, to communicate deeper meaning or aesthetic appeal through the details seen which would be missed if the whole were visible. I particularly enjoy photographing abstracts of classic vehicles– classic cars, classic airplanes, even classic boats– finding a lot of beauty in the curves, colors, and lines of these relics of bygone eras. Photographed at a car show in Gresham, Oregon, August 8th, 2015. See also my many other abstract photographs, especially of classic cars and classic aircraft.
