Description
Classic Car Chrome Abstract Reflected Grill. In this horizontally composed close abstract of the grill of a classic car (most likely a Ford Thunderbird, 1955-1956), the long repeating horizontal lines of the grill are taken up and reflected in the protrusion at one end of the grill (fashioned to resemble the engine intake of a jet aircraft), and are then distorted to form converging lines which point to the peak of the nacelle of the fake intake. Whites and blacks compete against each other, with the blues picked up from the sky winning out against both. I find it especially interesting that the fake jet intake has a particular shape, but that that shape is nearly completely masked by the reflection of the grill in the protuberance’s mirror-like finish. Abstract photography seeks to portray a subject not literally, but more viscerally, communicating through form (shapes, patterns, lines, curves), color, texture, and the play of light and shadow. Often, just a small portion of the whole subject is shown, in order for part to speak for the whole, to communicate deeper meaning or aesthetic appeal through the details seen which would be missed if the whole were visible. I particularly enjoy photographing abstracts of classic vehicles– classic cars, classic airplanes, even classic boats– finding a lot of beauty in the curves, colors, and lines of these relics of bygone eras. Photographed at a car show in Gresham, Oregon. See also my many other abstract photographs, especially of classic cars and classic aircraft.
