Description
Military Jet Intake. An abstract of the intake of a small military plane, the ring of the intake lip painted red in stark contrast with the white of the fuselage, wing, and engine nacelle. The repeated round form of the engine intake and nacelle contrast with the straighter lines in the rest of the composition. I typically take abstracts of classic and military craft, like this one, when I visit air museums, such as the Tillamook Air Museum (at the time of this writing, slated to be moved to Madras, Oregon), the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum in McMinnville, Oregon, or the Western Antique Aeroplane and Automobile Museum in Hood River, Oregon. However, if memory serves, I may have taken this photograph while atop the deck of the air craft carrier USS Midway, now serving as a museum in San Diego, California. The USS Midway has a variety of restored military aircraft, mostly fighters and other small craft. Abstract photography seeks to portray a subject not literally, but more viscerally, communicating through form (shapes, patterns, lines, curves), color, texture, and the play of light and shadow. Often, just a small portion of the whole subject is shown, in order for part to speak for the whole, to communicate deeper meaning or aesthetic appeal through the details seen which would be missed if the whole were visible. See also my many other photos of classic and military aircraft (many as abstracts), stunt aircraft, and more.
