Description
Morpho Butterfly. There are many species of Morpho butterflies, all in the genus Morpho. In this horizontal format shot, the brilliantly blue Morpho butterfly rests, wings open, on a field of bright yellow daisies, the colors contrasting fantastically. Rather than being centered (which would have resulted in a more static image), the butterfly is to the right and above the center, while the angle of the stems of the flowers, all oriented in the same direction, naturally lead the viewer’s eye to the subject. Both the foreground and background are pleasingly out of focus, helping to isolate the subject. Morpho butterflies range widely in central and south America, and most are known for their striking metallic blue wings, when opened and seen from above. This Morpho butterfly was photographed at the Oregon Zoo, in Portland, Oregon. Some years the Oregon Zoo has a butterfly garden, with both local and tropical butterflies. The garden makes it easier to find the butterflies to photograph, but can make it challenging to photograph them in a way that makes them appear to be in their natural environment, which is more pleasing to me than a background cluttered with people or artificial objects and surfaces. See my many other shots of butterflies.
