Description
Brown Clipper Butterfly (Parthenos sylvia), on frond. In this interesting horizontal composition, an intricately patterned brown, tan, black, and white butterfly rests on a many-leafed palm frond. The butterfly rests with its wings spread wide, showing off its regal beauty. This image has a definite foreground and background, with the butterfly and palm frond well in focus and well lit, while in the background the foliage is well out of focus and is more darkly lit, helping to highlight and isolate the subject. The image also has a lot of motion, imparted by the off-center placement of the insect, and greatly enhanced by the radial pattern of the frond’s leaves, which radiate out for a locus in the opposite corner of the frame from the butterfly, effectively giving the scene two centers of attention, with the palm then imparting its attention to the butterfly as the eye is drawn along the leaf to the subject. A very interesting and attention-getting composition. Brown Clipper Butterflies come from South East Asia, this one was photographed in a tropical butterfly garden in Victoria B.C., Canada, called the Victoria Butterfly Gardens, which are located not far from the Butchart Gardens. These butterfly gardens have a large variety of tropical butterflies in a setting which makes them much easier to find and a little easier to photograph. See also my many other photos of butterflies.
