Description
Malachite Butterfly (Siproeta stelenes). In this horizontal composition, a brilliantly yellow-green and black butterfly rests amid a frenzy of yellow daisies. The flowers also have red interiors to their petals, and the butterfly and flowers are contrasted in color to the green and purple background plants. The butterfly is well in focus, while the background becomes increasingly out of focus with distance (narrowing depth of field), helping to isolate the subject and make it stand out more. The butterfly’s wings are partially open, as if it might leap to flight at any moment. The Malachite butterfly is from South and Central America, and via a subspecies extends its range up into the southern United States and Cuba. This Malachite butterfly was photographed at the Oregon Zoo, in Portland, Oregon. Some years the Oregon Zoo has a butterfly garden, with both local and tropical butterflies. The garden makes it easier to find the butterflies to photograph, but can make it challenging to photograph them in a way that makes them appear to be in their natural environment, which is more pleasing to me than a background cluttered with people or artificial objects and surfaces. See my many other shots of butterflies.
