Description
Yaquina Head Lighthouse at Dusk. In this dramatic horizontal composition, the guiding light of the Yaquina Head lighthouse beams into the deep dusk, as seen from Agate Beach. There are many horizontal lines in this image mirroring the lighthouse's beam, including multiple horizon lines, multiple wave fronts in the surf, and many colored bands of clouds extending into the distance. The composition puts the mirrors of the lighthouse precisely at one third in from the right border, and one third down from the top, consequently putting the true horizon about half way down, but foreground horizons closer to a third of the way up from the bottom, yielding a pleasing balance. Additionally, the light of the sky reflected in the surf at the bottom left of the frame is balanced by the weight of the dark land which forms Yaquina Head. The colors of the image range from the warmer colors of post sunset in the sky, to the much cooler blues of approaching night, seen in the surf below the shadow of the head in the distance. The Yaquina Head Lighthouse is a historic building, construction began on it in 1871. At the time, the location was called Cape Foulweather, and early records list the building as the Cape Foulweather Lighthouse. It is on the central Oregon coast, not far from Lincoln City or Newport. See my other shots of Yaquina Head Lighthouse, and of the Oregon Coast.
