Description
Waimea Canyon- Kauai- horizontal 2. Mixed direct sunlight and cloud shadow gives this scene a wide range of hues, the deep red of the earth turning to dark purple, the bright yellow-green of the foliage turning to deep blue-green. This is a complex image, with a lot of details at all ranges and many different paths through the canyon in evidence. A dead tree stands in the foreground on the lip of the canyon, adding foreground interest. Waimea Canyon has been nicknamed the “Little Grand Canyon” and the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific.” Though much smaller in scale than the Grand Canyon, it is similar in appearance and is still quite impressive, even more so that this massive geological feature is found on such a small island. The drive up the canyon takes you through one of the driest places on the planet, where little is found except Kauai’s famous red dirt, rich in iron-oxides, and is a great contrast to the peak of Mt. Waialeale, one of the wettest spots on the planet. This dry-wet split personality owes its existence to the rain-shadow effect, where moisture-laden winds drop their water as the air cools while gaining altitude on its way up the windward side of the mountain, and once you get to the leeward side, little moisture is left. Waimea Canyon is found in the southwest part of Kauai, Hawaii. See also my many other shots of Waimea Canyon, including one very high resolution image scanned from a 4×5 transparency, and many other photographs of Kauai, as well as Maui.
