Description
Upper Multnomah Falls Ice, Oregon Waterfall. A winter storm freezes upper Multnomah Falls waterfall, in the Columbia River Gorge, Oregon. Upper Multnomah Falls, an exceptionally tall and thin (not wide) waterfall, plunges from the treed cliffs at the very top of the frame, down past basalt cliffs dramatically garbed in snow and ice and giant icicles, eventually plummeting into the snow atop the frozen pond at the base of the falls, near the bottom of the frame. A long exposure draws the moving water into long, silky white strands. Boulders add foreground interest. Predominant colors are the whites and blues of the falls and ice, the browns and grays of the basalt cliffs, and some oranges and yellows of the mosses growing on the cliffs. Located about thirty miles east of Portland, Oregon, in the scenic Columbia River Gorge, Multnomah Falls is one of the taller waterfalls in the United States, at 611 feet tall, with the upper falls at 542 feet tall and the lower falls at 69 feet tall. During the coldest of winters, when the Portland area typically experiences and ice storm, Multnomah Falls often freezes. See also my many other shots of Multnomah Falls, both frozen and thawed, and of the many other waterfalls in the Columbia River Gorge and Oregon.
