Description
Trio of Alula Plants- Limahuli Garden- Kauai- Hawaii. In this vertical composition, three Alula plants (Brighamia insignis) grow from a rocky volcanic boulder, their bright broad green leaves and small white flowers contrasting with the dark stone. With short, thick stocks, the plants appear to be somehow alien or otherworldly. These rare and endangered plants typically grow on cliff sides, and the flowers were pollinated by an unknown flying animal, probably a moth, now extinct. Since the only pollinator is extinct, the Alula will also go extinct, except in cases where its flowers are manually pollinated by people. Alula plants have also been classified as Brighamia citrina, and go also by the Hawaiian names Haha, Olulu, and Pu aupaka, and by the common names Cabbage-On-a-Baseball-Bat, Cabbage-On-a-Stick, and Hawaiian Palm. Photographed at the Limahuli Garden and Preserve, part of the National Tropical Botanical Gardens (NTGB), on Kauai, Hawaii. Kauai has both one of the driest spots on the planet and one of the wettest spots on the planet. This dry-wet split personality owes its existence to the rain-shadow effect, where moisture-laden winds drop their water as the air cools while gaining altitude on its way up the windward side of the mountain, and once you get to the leeward side, little moisture is left. See my many photographs of Kauai, many of those taken at the various National Tropical Botanical Gardens.
