Asian Swallowtail Butterfly (Papilio xuthus). In this horizontal composition, a pale yellow and black butterfly rests on a tattered palm frond, set against a jet black background. The butterfly contrasts well in color to the green of the palm frond and the background. What makes this shot particularly interesting is that the shapes of the wing of the butterfly, especially of the swallowtail, are mirrored in the torn edges of the palm leaf. The torn edges have a fine yellow edge, giving them further distinction against the jet black ground. The repeating pattern of parallel lines in the palm leaf also help to set apart the butterfly as the subject. Small for a swallowtail butterfly, Papilio xuthus is found in Asia from Japan up through China into Siberia, and also in Hawaii. It is also known as the Chinese Yellow Swallowtail and the Xuthus Swallowtail. This one was photographed on the Caribbean Island of St Maarten in a butterfly garden.
