Description
Strawberry Anemone (Corynactis californica). A horizontal format close-up showing a cluster of about a dozen Strawberry Anemones, their striking white-tipped bright pink tentacles quite evident and waving in the water. The anemones are contrasted against a dark background, the depth of field is narrow enough so that just the main subject in the middle distance is in focus. This Strawberry Anemone is sometimes identified as Actinia fragacea, but was identified as Corynactis californica by the Oregon Coast Aquarium where it was photographed, which demonstrates how more than one species may be given the same common name. Strawberry anemones (Corynactis californica) are found on rocky coasts on the western shores of the United States and Canada, from California to British Columbia, though they are more rare north of Oregon. Like all anemones, they are cnidarians and Anthozoans, their bodies structured like an upturned jellyfish, and have stinging nematocysts at the ends of their tentacles with which to paralyze their prey. They are also sessile– they spend their entire adult lives attached to one spot. This beautiful pink anemone was photographed at the Oregon Coast Aquarium, Newport, Oregon. Look also for my many other pictures of sea creatures and fish, photographed at the Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport, Oregon (very close to the Hatfield Marine Science Center), at the Maui Ocean Center in Hawaii, and at other locations.
