Description
Praying Mantis Claw- vertical (Mantis religiosa). An extreme close-up shot with Kodak Technical Pan ultra-low grain film. In this vertical composition (which could be flipped to horizontal without loss), it is easy to see how the double-row of sharp protrusions on either side of the hinged claw help the praying mantis keep a firm grip on its prey as it devours its meal. In this black and white image, an extreme close-up of the claw, the claw takes up more than the entire frame, its sharp and vicious barbs glistening in the light. The Praying Mantis ranges most of the world’s warmer climes, not usually ranging more than a few tens of degrees in latitude from the equator. However, owing to the fact that the Praying Mantis is often intentionally transported to other climates by farmers and gardeners, it can sometimes be found farther afield during warmer months. The Praying Mantis is and adept predator, spying its prey with its huge eyes, and catching it prey in barbed front claws before devouring it. This praying mantis was found in a garden in Gresham, Oregon. See also my many other shots of Praying Mantises and other insects.
