Description
Panther Creek Falls Summer Waterfall 1. In this mountain summertime photo of Panther Creek Falls, taken in the cool shade of late afternoon, a myriad of streams are drawn out into silky strands by the long exposure. In this wide-angle vertical composition taken during the summer, most of the falls is seen, Panther Creek’s waters plunging over the basalt ledge from the right, and the spring adding its waters from above, the whole cascading down the basalt cliff side to expand Panther Creek at the foot of the falls. The late afternoon shade provides a cool, even light, affording a lot of detail, the coolness complimenting the verdancy of the scene while highlighting the yellower tones of some of the patches of moss. The greens contrast with the browns and darker tones of the stone. There are a lot of diagonal lines as the waters tumble down and to the left, adding to the sense of motion and the restless feeling of the waters, but not taking away from the serenity of the sylvan scene.
North of Carson, Washington, near the Columbia River Gorge. This shot was taken from a high vantage point, about on level with the top of the falls, from a viewing area on a trail at the top of the falls, and gives a very good view of the falls across the narrow rock bowl. The trail below the viewing platform is precipitous, wet, slippery, strewn with loose rock, and is dangerous. Panther Creek Falls is on Panther Creek, a few miles upstream from Panther Creek Campground, also on Panther Creek. Located near Big Lava Bed in Skamania County, the falls shown here a formed from a confluence of Panther Creek and a broad natural spring at the same location, this upper part plunging over 100 feet. See my other shots of Panther Creek and Panther Creek Falls, and my many, many other shots of waterfalls, primarily those found in the Columbia River Gorge, east of Portland, Oregon (and also including this part of Washington’s southern border).
