Upper Multnomah Falls- Frozen waterfall 2. A winter storm freezes upper Multnomah Falls waterfall, in the Columbia River Gorge, Oregon, in this wide-angle vertical format photograph. Upper Multnomah Falls, an exceptionally tall and thin (not wide) waterfall, plunges through the frame, down past basalt cliffs dramatically garbed in snow and ice and giant icicles, and past a stone footbridge. A long exposure draws the moving water into long, silky white strands, contrasting the moving water with the hard, immobile ice. The lower tier, lower Multnomah Falls, starts midway down the frame under the bridge, wider and adding to the drama as it plunges into a frozen, snow-covered pool near the bottom of the frame. Predominant colors are the whites and blues of the falls and ice, the browns and grays of the basalt cliffs, and some yellows and many greens in the mosses on the cliffs.
