Malachite Butterfly (Siproeta stelenes). In this horizontal composition, a brilliantly yellow-green and black butterfly rests amid a frenzy of yellow daisies. The flowers also have red interiors to their petals, and the butterfly and flowers are contrasted in color to the green and purple background plants. The butterfly is well in focus, while the background becomes increasingly out of focus with distance (narrowing depth of field), helping to isolate the subject and make it stand out more. The butterfly’s wings are partially open, as if it might leap to flight at any moment. The Malachite butterfly is from South and Central America, and via a subspecies extends its range up into the southern United States and Cuba.
