Description
Japanese Boar Scarer in Garden Pond. Photographed at Butchart Gardens, Victoria B.C., Canada. In this shady horizontal composition, an iconic Japanese boar scarer sits waiting, receiving water from a bamboo fountain, ready to tilt and strike its unique sound. The pond in which it sits is partially sunlit, showing the beautiful green of the water, complimenting the emerald tones of the foliage which frames the pond and the scene. Butchart Gardens was started to beautify the mined-out limestone quarry on the estate property. It now features a variety of gardens, from an indoor garden, to a hanging basket garden, to a Japanese garden, and much more. Common in Japanese culture are these boar scarers. The bamboo tube is mounted on a swivel, and tips once it is full of water. As it swings down, it drains out the water in the tube. Without the weight of the water in the tube, it quickly swings back to its original position, striking a stone and making a distinctive sound. It is now ready to repeat the process several seconds later, once the bamboo tube fills up again. Images of these boar scarers, or even just the iconic sound of one, are quite common in Japanese media, from motion pictures to anime.
