Description
Hammerhead shark (Sphyrna lewini) in silhouette. Photographed at the Maui Ocean Center, Maui, Hawaii. In this dramatic horizontal composition, the hammerhead shark is seen from below as it swims overhead, an ominous black silhouette set against vividly blue water through which light from the surface streams. The hammer shape of the head is called a cephalofoil (literally, head-wing), and serves to improve the fish’s field of vision, provides a better placement for electrosensory organs, and may help underwater maneuverability. Hammerheads are found in coastal waters nearly the world over, shunning only the colder waters of the arctic and antarctic. They have been known to swim in great schools. Look also for my many other shots of sharks, fish, and sea life, taken at the Maui Ocean Center in Maui, Hawaii, at the Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport, Oregon, and at other locations.
