Giant Swallowtail Butterfly (Papilio cresphontes). In this striking image in horizontal format, a very large butterfly, with yellow wings with black and blue markings, rests astride a centered brilliant red flower with wide, green leaves, the whole scene set against a completely white background. The effect greatly isolates and highlights the butterfly. The Giant Swallowtail butterfly is the largest butterfly in North America. This Giant Swallowtail butterfly was photographed at the Oregon Zoo, in Portland, Oregon. Some years the Oregon Zoo has a butterfly garden, with both local and tropical butterflies. The garden makes it easier to find the butterflies to photograph, but can make it challenging to photograph them in a way that makes them appear to be in their natural environment, which is more pleasing to me than a background cluttered with people or artificial objects and surfaces.
