Description
Domino Sugar Plant and Water Tower. In this vertical composition, the oldest portion of the Domino Sugar refinery at Chalmette on the Mississippi stands reddened by the warm evening light, its blue and yellow signage in contrast with the blue sky. A similarly-signed water tower occupies the lower right of the frame. The image is sharp and reveals a lot of detail, with many of the individual bricks of the smoke stack quite evident. More than 100 years old, Domino Sugar’s Chalmette refinery in Louisiana on the Mississippi is the first domestic U.S. refinery to process over a million tons a year. The 400 employee factory processes about 60% of the raw sugar produced by Louisiana’s cane farmers. Producing seven million pounds of sugar a day, the Domino Sugar Chalmette refinery accounts for about 19 percent of the country’s cane sugar.
