Blue Angels Very Close Formation 1. In this tight horizontal composition, four brightly-colored blue and yellow Blue Angels fighter jets fly in a very close diamond formation, streaking across the frame from right to left, trailing white smoke against the clear blue sky. A fast shutter speed helps to freeze the motion of the fast moving jets and preserves detail, with many of the pilots’ helmets apparent through the aircraft canopies. The use of a telephoto lens compresses the apparent distance between the jets, but they are flying extremely close, with just about 18 inches between wingtip bottom and canopy top. Though blue against a clear blue sky, the full sunlight and good contrast help to isolate the jets from the background and adds definition to the image.
