Description
Air National Guard MX-S Tumble 1. In this horizontal composition, a brightly-painted blue, white, and yellow stunt plan, trailing white smoke, cavorts in the cloudless blue sky, tumbling through the firmament. “Air National Guard” is prominent in the airplane’s paint scheme. This is one of several images in a series shot as the aircraft tumbled and rolled end over end through its own smoke, the white trail tracing its journeys. A fast shutter speed freezes the motion, preserving detail. The composition places the aircraft a third of the frame from the edge both vertically and horizontally (rather than centered), adding more drama and sense of motion to the scene, and allowing for greater inclusion of its smoke trail. The Air National Guard MX-S is a small, single seat stunt plane of carbon fiber construction. It has a wingspan of 24 feet, and a length of a little over 21 feet. With a gross weight of only 1840 lbs, and a 250-380 Hp engine, the aircraft is quite aerobatic, achieving a roll rate of 420 degrees per second (well more than a full roll each second) and a top speed of 230 knots (over 260 mph). It’s carbon fiber construction allows an ultimate wing loading of 14 G, positive or negative. This Air National Guard MX-S was piloted by John Klatt at the 2015 Oregon International Air Show. See my many other photos of the MX-S, as well as many other stunt, military, and classic aircraft.
